Monitor as Light

No Signal Test Pattern

How to use

The classic TV color bars test pattern with a No Signal message drifting slowly across it, in fullscreen. Use it as a retro prop, a video background, a way to look busy, or a quick look at your display's colors.

How to use it

  1. Press F or the fullscreen button.
  2. Move the mouse away so the controls and cursor fade out.
  3. Press Esc to leave fullscreen.

About the color bars

These are SMPTE color bars, the test pattern American broadcasters used to calibrate monitors. The seven top bars are 75% white, yellow, cyan, green, magenta, red and blue. The dark blocks along the bottom right were used to set black level. The No Signal box moves slowly, as it did on real televisions, so it never burns into the screen.

Questions

Can I use this to calibrate my monitor?

Only roughly. Browser colors depend on your display settings and color profile, so use a proper calibration tool for exact work.

Can I use it in a video?

Yes. Record the screen or capture the browser window. The color bar layout itself is a public standard.

How do I go fullscreen?

Press F on a keyboard, or use the fullscreen button in the bar at the bottom. Press Esc or F again to leave. On iPhone, Safari does not allow real fullscreen, so add the page to your home screen for the cleanest view.
