Monitor as Light

Video Call Lighting

How to use

A soft, even light for Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and FaceTime. Put this page on a second screen or around your call window, and your face stops looking grey and shadowed.

How to light a video call with your screen

  1. Open this page on a second monitor, tablet or phone placed just behind or beside your webcam.
  2. Go fullscreen and turn the device's brightness up.
  3. Start at around 5600K and 85% brightness, then adjust until your skin looks natural in the call preview.
  4. With only one screen, make the call window smaller and place it over the middle of this page. The light around it still lights your face.

Why it helps

Webcams have small sensors. In dim light they raise the gain, which makes the picture grainy and soft. A light facing you from the front fills in shadows, lets the camera use a cleaner exposure and makes your eyes visible. Light from the front is what matters: a bright window behind you does the opposite and turns you into a silhouette.

Getting the color right

If the call shows you orange, raise the warmth value. If you look blue or pale, lower it. Mixed light looks odd on camera, so match the main light in the room: about 5600K by a window in the day, 3500–4500K in the evening with lamps on.

Questions

Does this work with Zoom and Teams?

Yes. The page is just a light on your screen, so it works with any call app. It never touches your camera or microphone.

What if I only have one screen?

Make the call window smaller and place it over the middle of this page. The light around the window still lights your face. A tablet or phone next to the laptop gives more light.

Should the light be warm or cool?

Match your room. Near a window during the day, use about 5600K. In the evening with warm lamps on, try 3500–4500K.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, no download and no time limit. It runs in your browser and never asks for camera, microphone or location access.
